Standards and Ethics Board Overview
Overview of the BVIUK Standards and Ethics Oversight Board (SEOB)

The Standards and Ethics Oversight Board (SEOB) is a cornerstone of BVIUK’s governance, tasked with providing expert guidance and recommendations to support the organisation in upholding ethical and professional standards across its membership.
Its role is consultative and supportive, ensuring alignment with the strategic direction set by the Executive Management (EM).

The Board Leader and Members of the SEOB are elected by the Executive Management for a fixed two-year term. These individuals are selected for their expertise, professional standing, and ability to contribute meaningfully to BVIUK’s ethical and professional framework.

The SEOB’s primary responsibilities include assisting in the development of robust policies and guidelines to encourage compliance with BVIUK’s ethical and professional standards. The SEOB also promotes awareness and understanding of these standards among members, ensuring they are informed and equipped to uphold the organisation's principles.

Where necessary, the SEOB may be asked to review alleged breaches of BVIUK’s Standards and Ethics. It carries out impartial investigations and provides recommendations regarding appropriate sanctions or corrective actions to the Executive Management. However, all decisions are subject to the approval of the EM, which holds the final authority to implement or request reconsideration of the SEOB’s recommendations.

Responsibilities, Meetings, and Reporting

The SEOB operates under the oversight of the Executive Management. Its purpose is to provide informed opinions and recommendations as requested, ensuring that its activities support the broader goals of BVIUK.

The SEOB is required to hold regular monthly meetings at a scheduled time. These meetings serve as a platform for discussion and collaboration and are open to Executive Management to ensure transparency.

To maintain accountability, the Leader of the SEOB provides periodic updates to the Executive Management and prepares an annual report on the Board’s activities. This report is published in BVIUK’s journal, The Valuer, highlighting the SEOB’s contributions and reinforcing BVIUK’s commitment to ethical integrity and professional excellence.
